Course Details:
TactiCop’s two-day Homicide and Cold Case training seminar will give an opportunity for students to explore several case studies ranging from homicide and cold case homicide cases resolved by a variety of techniques. These case resolutions involved a combination of traditional investigative techniques and advanced scientific methods. Topics covered will include cognitive interview
considerations, cold case evaluation criteria, review of current and advancing technologies. Case studies will include serial killer investigation, child murder, domestic murder, officer involved shooting. Cold case resolutions through forensic genetic genealogy, witness re-interviews, CODIS and latent identifications, unidentified human remains investigations, and overdose death resulting in murder conviction.
Course Instructor:
Corporal David Nutting (retired) has 34 years of Law Enforcement between the Volusia and Orange County Sheriff’s Offices. In 2023 Corporal Nutting retired and continued to support investigations as a Liaison for a forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) company. Corporal Nutting has been a law enforcement trainer since 2002. Corporal Nutting was assigned to General CID Crimes, Narcotics, US Marshals Task Force, FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, Patrol Supervisor, FTO, Organized Crime Tech Team Supervisor, and Homicide and Cold Case Supervisor. During Corporal Nutting’s assignment to Homicide and Cold Case in Orange County, the unit handled approximately 60 murders per year, with over 500 cold cases. Homicide Teams worked Deputy involved shootings, manslaughters, overdose deaths, justifiable homicides, suicides, and any other unattended death. During Corporal Nutting’s supervision of the Cold Case Team over a dozen cold case homicides were resolved. FGG was used in 23 cold cases. The FGG work resulted in one conviction and the identification of multiple previously unidentified victims.
